LCD Textiles is a unique textile collection that blurs the line between material experimentation, design research, and artistic expression. At its heart is a deep exploration of how light, technical fibres, and metal can come together to redefine what textile materials can be. Both natural and technical fibres, such as copper filaments, rubber, fishing lines, raffia, and even horse hair are used, woven on jacquard looms to create textiles that interact with light in striking ways.

Vandersanden have made Pirrouet® the first carbon-negative facing brick.

These innovative bricks looks like ordinary one but they are cured rather than fired, this absorbs carbon permanently during the production process, called carbonation .

1 tonne of Pirrouet facing bricks absorbs up to 60kg of CO2 permanently. The brick is actually a hard limestone, with 80% of its composition coming from mineral by-products from the steel industry. The bricks come with a unique surface texture and 11 colours.

Did you know that in ancient times they created silk from common sea shells? 🐚

A luxurious golden silk once reserved for Roman emperors. The textile was prized for being lightweight and durable. It has an an unfading golden luster. Later discovered that the gold hue is not created by dye, but from structural colour, similar to similar to the iridescent shimmer of a butterfly’s wing

It is crafted from the byssal threads of the large Mediterranean mollusk , these are silky filaments they use for anchoring to rocks. Also called mussle beards.

Unfortunately due to climate change these molluscs are on the bring of extinction. Researchers at @postech.global in Korea are looking to to revive this 2,000-year-old textile. They are looking to use more common types of molluscs or even gathering the silk from seafood wastes. The Sea Silk project @thewovenworld is also harvesting pen clams to create textiles.

FabBRICK are a creative studio based in Paris. They are reinventing textile upcycling to make beautiful interior surfaces.

They take waste fabrics & textiles from old clothing, curate and sort the colours, shred up the fibres and press them into bricks. The bricks are soft to the touch, rich in texture, colourful and have acoustic properties.

The bricks come in a range of colours and can be used to clad interior walls or also large bricks of different shapes can be used to make furniture.

Olivier van Herpt is the pioneer of 3D Ceramic digital fabrication technologies. He collaborates with the machine and clay to craft the most beautiful cermamic vessels.

Since 2014 he has been tinkering, experimenting and refining the use of 3D printed clay . His innovations are not only in the 3D printing technique but also in clay recipes, extruding clay, drying and firing methodologies. Each object can take weeks to perfect, with numerous attempts.

His latest creations uses his self-developed technique, ‘The Colorful White’. It is a new approach to colouring ceramics which maintains the tactility of the surface texture which is normally lost when glazed. Unlike the traditional glazing process, this method involves applying colour only to the exterior of the raw clay filament prior to shaping/printing.

Wedge @wedge.obj is a London-based material design and research studio working making sculptural furniture using digital fabrication, computational design… and sand.

The studio was founded by physicists and artists who developed their sand-based process for their signature amorphic & organic designs. Made from Quartz (SiOz) and water-bound biopolymer (CHoOs)n, which binds grain to grain without heat or using a mould. The surfaces have a tactile grainy texture and has been used to make chairs, speaker covers and interior accessories.

At the @materialmatters.design show we discovered these beautiful stones Larvikite and Anorthosite from Lunds @lundhsrealstone

Coming from Norway it has stunning flecks of iridescent blue which comes from the super slow cooling of the stone over hundreds of years creating large crystal structure.

This stone is as hard as granite but only found in Norway.

@kvadrattextiles ‘In the Making’ display showcased the raw materials behind their ocean plastic derived textiles and natural wool fabrics.

@crafting_plastics playful line up of 3d printed stools made form their Nuatan® biopolymers.

A beautiful display of coloured wood chip Foresso surfaces from @solomonandwu made from recycled hardwoods and jesmonite.

@noti_furniture totemic line up was a curation of material and colour. The pieces featured stunning @alpi_wood burl-like veneers and painted woods.

@revive.innovations created a huge round table from recycled polypropylene.

And finally one of the top highlights was @_jacob_marks thorough investigations into pine resin. He explored this natural , waterproof biomaterial in many applications and formats; lacquered surfaces for furniture and impregnated into textiles for lighting.

Material Matters was part of @l_d_f_official 2025, can’t wait for next year !

A long term favourite material of ours is @buxkin Recycled leather

This ribbed surface is made from offcuts from the Italian shoe industry, the reimagined leather can be used to create a beautiful soft interior spaces.

The leather is collected, rigorously sorted, then granulated. The leather granules are mixed with water, latex, coloured pigments and some other additives. The mixture is then pressed out flat and corrugated.

Can be use for vertical interior surfaces for a touch of warm detailing.

When we think of carbon fibre, we usually think of black, glossy & technical… or it’s seen on high performance applications like bikes, sport equipment and cars, where light-weighting is crucial.

But HYPETEX @hypetex have been opening up design possibilities with their carbon fibre colourisation process. Created by racing car engineers, colour can be applied to all the usual CF weave structures like twill, spread tow, pattered and even flax fibres.

The colourisation process is applied to the fibre itself so eliminates the need for traditional painting afterwards. The process uses water-based resins and nano pigments .

This opens up opportunities for designers to experiment with using colourful fibre composites for interior applications such furniture. Facilitating a lightweight, colourful, performance driven design aesthetic.

ICON have been 3D printing structures for a while now but they are now developing a next-gen multi-story robot which will change the way we build.

Recently they partnered with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture @hsuoffice to bring a 2 storey affordable homes to Austin, Texas. They are built on site in around 24 hours using their pioneering large-scale 3D printing,

Another project in the works in the worlds first 3D printed hotel being built in the Texas desert designed by @big_builds. The printed ‘filament’ is an extruded mix of their cementious material combined with local sand, soil, and subtle pigments that mirror the terrain. Achieving a lavacrete cement-like, low-carbon, strong material that its tuned to the landscape and its humidity and heat.

Due the printing process the designs ends up blending traditional architecture forms as well as organic & seamless.

We have been loving the experimental materials coming from Spanish designer Alberto Sánchez, Co-founder of @mut_design and @bruto_objects .

He experiments with ceramics, metals, stone, wood and glass to make unique interior furniture, objects and lighting.

Chapa y Pintura a series of metal chairs with a unique coated steel surface which pays tribute process from auto body repair shops.

Also the Facetas collection looks at the 19th-century Tiffany stained-glass technique to create a unique glass objects. The method involves joining small pieces of glass using a delicate process of copper and tin soldering.

We have been watching all the wood based innovations that come out of Atelier Steven Leprizé for a number of years now. This year they pushedcome up with even more the boundaries of what is possible with their Woowood© technology even further!

The Flow Clock is the latest creation. It looks like the Walnut’s grain & surface comes is alive over time. Illuminations appear through the wood grain to function as clock digits, helping you to navigate the time.

Woowood© technology is a combination of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation. It is an expandable wooden skin which stretches and can follow the contours of an object. The material is composed of a rigid support, an elastic membrane and a facing made of wood, plastic, stone, leather, lacquer, ceramic or even cork. The wood, or surface, becomes a tension material allowing multiple functionalities in furniture and cabinetry such as cable management, lighting, pockets, drawers & storage.

Australian design studio @tigmitrading create and curate a meticulous edit of artisan-made rugs. They source rugs from all around the world; from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, to the Black Sea. Their luxury materials are committed to responsible practice, helping to sustain the economies and techniques of traditional artisans.

Shown there is their new Cashmere collection, it has a refined tactility. Handwoven from a blend of cashmere and New Zealand wool, it has been handloomed with a dense 200-knot count for softness yet durability. Comes in neutral solids of natural shades like Ivory & Wheat finished with woven trim.

This year @glasitalia have been busy creating new materials with recycled glass.

These BABAR tables, designed by @patricia_urquiola , are crafted from 100% recycled glass. This is a conglomerate of recycled glass grit and glass shards blended with biopolymers.

They come in a small range of pastel colours. As each piece is handmade and due to the process each one is unique and unrepeatable.

The table’s surfaces are irregular & the geometry is organic. The collection celebrates the materiality of the recycled glass particles.

The series of images called ‘Fictional Ruins’ does not exist in reality. They explore the notion of an architectural ‘ruin’ through the collective memory of AI.

We love the mix of different stone finishes & textures compiled together; split face, polished, honed and reclaimed elements. Part reconstituted, part super natural, yet nostalgic. The project celebrates stone materials at a grand scale.

It is incredible what @paperfactor are able create with just paper 📄 They turn this everyday material into rustic, marbleous and tactile decorative surfaces.

This Italian company creates a paper skin using their innovative technique. It begins by combining natural cellulose fibres, recycled materials and eco- binders. The mixture is pressed at specific temperature to achieve a density and texture resembling wood or natural stone or earth. Through hand crafting its is pressed into moulds and finished as desired.

The end result is solid, strong, pliable, and durable. The process almost looks like icing a cake or clay. There is no limit to colours, textures or pattern and custom surfaces.

In terms of environmental impact, it ticks all the boxes. The pulp comes from either recycled or FSC-certified forests, combines natural and water-based colour pigments. In addition the materials is designed for reuse and repurposing.

The latest launch in the world of materials is the Skip Tile. @frontmaterials claims it’s the most sustainable ceramic they have made to date.

Front materials (previously Stone Cycling ) in partnership with @alusiduk have reinvented the ceramic tile with a new tile with 51% less Co2 emissions.

This novel innovation uses a dry process that skips the energy-intensive spray drying step in traditional ceramic tile manufacture.
Its also made from 95% waste (transforms post-consumer glass and discarded ceramics) and used 44% less water.

It can be used for interior and exterior walls and floors.

London-based research studio Study O Portable has created a series of furnishings made from rubber that looks like rock & rock that acts like rubber.

The Rubber Rocks body of work is composed of furniture objects that explore the tension between permanence and impermanence, transformation and erosion, ruin and replication.

Their material creates an illusion of what looks heavy and enduring is but is in fact soft and pliable to the touch. It is crafted with pigmented rubber eraser with marble dust, and hand-sculpted to look like the fragment of a weathered granite column or architectural elements in decay.

This work, which was on display at Gallery Fumi, consists of a set of carved granite furnishings; monolithic stools, consoles, shelves and benches.

Stone suppliers @britannicus_stone are celebrating Britain’s unique geology; from green Ledmore marble quarried in the Scottish Highlands to the characterful Moorcroft Grey down south in Devon.

Most decorative stone used in the UK is imported, because too few architects, specifiers and customers have discovered British stone. Their stone comes from highly regulated and environmentally sustainable UK quarries with a social license.

We mostly see cork being used as an interior floor finishes, for wall tiles or furniture. But rarely seen on exterior building facades.

Imagine your pink upholstery dyed with avocado skins or your purple curtains tinted with red cabbage waste?

UK based Sages @_sages__ are pioneering the use coloured textiles from abundant food waste. They extract the colour from different types of food, reformulate it using their property green chemistry to create sustainable pigments and dyes for textiles.

Their natural dyes are biodegradable and come in a range of colours depending on the type of food waste. For example they collaborated with Westfalia Fruit to transform avocado waste into our vibrant shades of pink. Other colours can be derived from blueberries, red cabbages, pomegranate and onion skins. The dyes are non-toxic and have no odour when dyed.

Fernando Laposse @fernandolaposse is a Mexican designer who has a regenerative and playful approach to materiality and design.

He combines regional, often overlooked, argricualtal fibres & materials such as sisal, loofah, and corn leaves from Mexico with contemporary design. Blending indigenous craft, furniture and material research.

The table’s surface is made of marquetry tiles using purple heirloom corn husks,hard maple wood then laminated on recycled aluminium.

The hairy dog bench, armchair and a cabinet are made from furry agave fibers. This “vegan fur” is made with the waste of the mezcal industry where usually the leaves of the agave just get thrown away.

The daybed is made with hand stitched loofah fruit sponges with a unique texture.

This incredible project with @cartier uses fused glass to make a unique glacier cave designed by Wanda Valihrachová @wandavonval

Inspired by the shimmering ice found in real alpine caves, individual components are unique and textures to imitate the surface of ice, to make a passageway.

Bubbles are created by tiny crystals of glass being melted between two panes of glass. These bubbles are permeated through, produced during the process of melting, so their shape cannot be predicted in advance.

Designer Wanda Valihrachová also created art piece Glaciero which consists of several dozen glass plates overlapping each other and shaping a cartographic model of numerous ice layers around 60 cm thick at the widest point.

@plasticiet have supplied high-end recycled plastic solid sheet materials for a while now. With their original unique & colourful terrazzo/confetti inspired sheets. Or their Mother Of Pearl materials, handfolded from polycarbonate recovered from headlights with a chatoyancy light effect.

Their latest material is Karlite. Also made from recycled car headlights. This clear technical plastic has been refashioned into a crafted silky surface reminiscent of cast glass or light diffusing alabaster stone. And the borate mineral Karlite itself.

These materials can be used in product design, furniture and interior spaces to architectural applications and installations. They also offer bespoke material development.

Taking inspiration from technical industries like automotive, sailing and sports, flax fibres can be made into composite material. A renewable, plant based alternative to carbon and glass fibre composites.

Woven flax textiles are injected with water-based resins and cured into a solid, light weight and durable 3D forms. We have seen increasing use of these materials for high end interiors, furniture, facades and architecture.

Leveraging the unique properties and benefits of using this technical plant-based materials is the reduced weight, up to 50%, also up to 60% lower CO₂ footprint vs. similar plastic parts.

For example ampliTex™ by @bcompltd has been used to make @tras_135 REI chair, @gr_amplifiers speakers and TEMCA solar cladding.

A fun and colourful take on acoustic materials is SOUNDBOUNCE by MWO design @mwo_design 🎾

Their creations upcycle approx x283 tennis balls per square metre, with and the equivalent of 8.5 kg of CO2. This comes from a waste stream of the fifth most polluting sport in the world. We love their experimentation with colour, patterns and gradients. They can apply their upcycled, noise-absorbing surface material, to panels, benches, stools and walls.

Recently they made acoustic panels made from 1,200 used tennis balls collected from last year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament, which will added to the The Cavendish restaurant. Each ball was hand-dyed in Wimbledon’s signature purple and green.

Paper-wood is a fun and colourful alternative to traditional plywood. Made by TAKIZAWA Veneer, based in Japan, by layering and laminating coloured paper and birch wood, giving a through-coloured striped edge.

This material has a playful grain giving an opportunity for unique multicoloured detailing in furniture, cabinetry and panelling for interiors. It can be chamfered or CNC at an angle to give a mokume effect or cut straight for an interesting exposed edges.

More recently they have designed curated floral patterns made from handpicked blossoms and petals.

These surfaces create a sensory experiences, combining scent, texture and nature. Claiming to support health, these materials ‘help reduce stress, lighten the mood and increase concentration’.

Zena Holloway @rootfull manipulates plant roots to make them to grow into intricate, lace-like textile arrangements and structures.

Merging craft with biology. The growth process of the plant’s root system is controlled to create both natural and man-made patterns. Made using soil, wheat grass seeds, light and intricately carved wax templates. The roots follow these patterns and from there the work grows itself in just 2 weeks.

She creates a range of lighting, wall hangings and clothing (bio-couture) using this beautiful bio fabricated material.

To celebrate the glorious summer we have been having here in the UK, we wanted to spotlight the beautiful flower infused materials by Marcin Rusak @marcinrusak

An artist, designer and researcher from Poland, his project Flora, Perma and Glaes is a result of intense experimentation over the years with waste flowers and material formulations using resins and composites. He submerges flowers within matter to create “living” objects and surfaces.

He discovered that by injecting a special set of bacteria able to survive without oxygen and at very high temperatures, the flowers infused in the resin are consumed from within, decomposing and disappearing over time, leaving voids gradually filled with natural light.

His work is both sculptural and functional as he creates tables, cabinets and vases, also implementing the material into in architectural environments.

The studio can also make custom-developed flower-infused materials taking into account the local vernacular flora.

@brodieneill is a London based furniture maker and a master of materiality. He reinterprets and elevates sustainable materials. Transforming reclaimed or recycled raw material into high end furniture which blends his design language with state-of-the-art digital technology.

He created a series of work using his Ocean terrazzo material produced with tiny fragments of ocean-plastic waste.

The table tops are cast in one piece using particles of ocean plastic and bio-resin. Resulting in a kaleidoscopic, whirlpool, mosaic effect with millions of fragments.

To make this work possible he collaborated with an international network of scientists, beachcombers, engineers, artisans and manufacturers to collect and reconstitute the small fragments of plastic washed-up on the shores.

This week we are continuing to look at 3D printing material innovations, but this time on a much larger scale 🏰

Researchers at @ethzurich have used concrete to 3D print organic and futuristic architecture. At 30 metres high, with 4 storeys, the tower is located in Mulegns, Switzerland and is the world’s tallest 3D-printed tower.

Firstly computer algorithms generate the ornamental and load bearing structural elements, and then 2 robots fabricate and extrude the concrete layer by layer. This process does not need any supportive casting moulds and is resource efficient.

Swiss design studio @hotwireextensions have found a way to turn abundant and overlooked 3D printing waste matter into incredible surreal bone-like structured furniture, lighting and interior accessories 🦴

The innovative processs, invented by @fabiohendry offers a disruptive approach to industrial manufacturing.

The process to make these structures starts by creating a shape using nichrome wire.
The wires are buried inside a volume of waste nylon powder, from SLS 3D printing, with sand. Then an electric current is sent through the wire, causing the surrounding nylon to melt and grow around the form and turn into a solid stone like material. The longer the current flows, the larger the fused material becomes leading to endless flexibility in length and width.

The process is made in collaboration with @gottiswitzerland and their waste nylon material.

Did you know leaves can be made into leather?

This is a very unusual type of leather made by @nova.kaeru where it’s not an animal hide but a large leaf.
The leather is called BeLeaf and is made from Brazilian teak tree leaves that have fallen in the natural cycle, so this material does not contribute to deforestation.

The large fallen leaves are handpicked, soaked in water with natural mineral dyes to give a range of colours from blue, orange and black & white.

After the processing a robust and water-repellent leaf leather material is ready to use. Applications include watch straps, bags, upholstery or wall panels.

Did you know recycled PVC plastic can be crafted into colourful building facades?

These are the Pretty Plastic Panels. @we_are_prettyplastic
Made from 100% recycled PVC waste and turned into innovative facade cladding. They are durable, fire-resistant panels with a unique appearance.

Recycling PVC isn’t easy due to additives and contamination but Pretty Plastic have managed to produce cladding tiles made from 100% recycled PVC waste, sourced from old building materials such as window frames and drainpipes.

These tiles make for a really striking façades, as seen in the renovated Tongelreep National Swimming Centre in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Made using around 30,800 tiles & 24.2 kg waste per m² upcycled.

Specialist Washi papers from Wagamiya , Igarashi Seishi, the Japan based studio that has been in existence for over 100 years.

The material has a beautiful tactility that looks even better in person. Their advanced but traditional techniques can create three-dimensional expressions of modern washi from a traditional wood pulp fibres, kozo, Manila hemp and up cycled fruit & vegetable wastes.

Handmade in the factory they make papers for interior decoration. Ranging from wallpapers to light coverings to screens, and fusuma paper to wrapping paper, sake labels and small items. They do not limit themselves and can make custom washi of various thicknesses, sizes and patterns.

First slide is made from dyed hemp fibres.

The texture on slide 2 is the Rakusui pattern which is made by dropping water onto raw paper to make holes like craters.

Slide 9 shows Onion skin scraps mixed with up-cycled Washi.
